The Founding Rashei Yeshiva

The special atmosphere of the Yeshiva has been created by the continuity of leadership of HaRav Yehuda Amital  zt"l and HaRav Aharon Lichtenstein zt"l, who merged the best traditions of Judaic studies with a pragmatic grasp of the modern world. These two Roshei Yeshiva – very different in background, temperament, and approach – provided a shining example of successful joint leadership built on mutual respect. This model serves to guide and elevate the personal and professional lives of the alumni, long after they have left the Yeshiva.

Harav Yehuda Amital zt"l

Harav Yehuda Amital (1924–2010) was the founding rosh yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion, a position in which he served for forty years.

A Holocaust survivor from Hungary, he fought in Israel’s War of Independence. In the 1950’s he helped conceive the Hesder program, wherein students combine yeshiva study and military service in order to contribute to the physical and spiritual welfare of the Jewish people and as a path to personal growth – a dream he most fully realized with the founding of Yeshivat Har Etzion in the wake of the Six Day War.

He served as a role model and inspiration to his thousands of students, and influenced even broader circles within the Religious Zionist public through his unique personality, which combined Torah greatness, life wisdom, warmth, charm, and far-reaching vision.

Harav Aharon Lichtenstein zt"l

Harav Aharon Lichtenstein zt"l (1933–2015) was born in Paris, France, and escaped the Nazi occupation with his family, arriving in the United States in 1941. After studying at Yeshivat Rabbi Chaim Berlin under Rabbi Yitzchok Hutner, he earned his rabbinic ordination at Yeshiva University and his PhD in English Literature at Harvard University. While at Yeshiva University, he became a close disciple of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, who was later to become his father-in-law. After serving as a Rosh Yeshiva and Rosh Kollel at Yeshiva University for several years, Rabbi Lichtenstein made Aliya to Israel in 1971 and joined Rabbi Yehuda Amital at the helm of Yeshivat Har Etzion in Alon Shevut. Under their joint leadership over four decades, Yeshivat Har Etzion grew into a major center of advanced Torah study, graduating thousands of alumni – including hundreds of educators and community rabbis – and exerting a strong influence in Israel, the United States, and other centers of Jewish life.

Committed to intensive and original Torah study, Rabbi Lichtenstein also articulated a bold Jewish worldview that embraced elements of modernity within the framework of a Torah life. In recognition of his outstanding scholarship and contributions, Rabbi Lichtenstein was awarded in 2014 the State of Israel’s highest honor, the Israel Prize, in the category of Torah Literature. Alongside his genuine Torah greatness and the breadth and depth of his philosophy, he was renowned for his deep humility, nobility and love of humanity.

Rashei HaYeshiva

Before retiring, HaRav Amital zt"l initiated steps to choose his eventual replacement. To this end, a committee was established, consisting of representatives of the Ramim, alumni of the Yeshiva in Israel and abroad, and the administration. The committee dealt with the matter for several months and presented its recommendations to the Rashei Yeshiva and the administration. The recommendations were accepted by them and they chose HaRav Yaakov Medan and HaRav Baruch Gigi as designated Rashei Yeshiva. The actual appointment became effective during the 5766 academic year, at which time the two new Rashei Yeshiva began serving alongside the two senior Rashei Yeshiva.
On 29 Tishrei 5769 (2008), Harav Mosheh Lichtenstein shlit"a was also inaugurated as Rosh Yeshiva, joining Harav Aharon Lichtenstein zt"l, Harav Yaakov Medan shlit"a and Harav Baruch Gigi shlit"a. Harav Yehuda Amital zt"l, founding Rosh Yeshiva, while continuing his involvement with the yeshiva, officially retired as Rosh Yeshiva at that time.
The Stella K. Abraham Beit Midrash for Women, headed by Rabbanit Esti Rosenberg, was established in 5757 (1997) by Yeshivat Har Etzion under the leadership of the late Rashei Yeshiva Rav Aharon Lichtenstein zt”l and Rav Yehuda Amital zt”l.
