Rav Yehoshua Amaru

Rav Joshua Amaru

An alumnus of Har Etzion, Josh Amaru teaches Tanakh and Jewish Philosophy at Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi in Jerusalem and he is also one of the scholars overseeing the translation of the Talmud and its new format for the Koren/Steinsaltz Talmud Bavli. He holds a doctorate in philosophy from Bar Ilan University, specializing in ethics and philosophy of mind. Previously, he spent ten years studying at Yeshivat Har Etzion, mostly with the late Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein, and received rabbinic ordination from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. His current project as a Templeton fellow is to explore the foundations of rule-following in the context of the Halakha, with a particular interest in the possibility of articulating a kind of virtue ethics as a necessary condition of halakhic discourse and practice.
