ויקרא רבה ג:ב

 

נפש כי תקריב קרבן מנחה לה'
(תהלים כב): יראי ה' הללוהו כל זרע יעקב כבדוהו [וגורו ממנו כל זרע ישראל].
 

יראי ה'
אר' יהושע בן לוי: אלו יראי שמים.
רבי ישמעאל בר נחמן אמר: אלו גרי צדק.
רבי חזקיה ורבי אבהו, בשם ר"א אמרי: אם באין הן גרי צדק לעולם הבא אנטונינוס בא בראש כולן.
 

ומה ת"ל כל זרע יעקב כבדוהו?
אלו אחד עשר שבטים.
א"כ למה נאמר כל זרע ישראל?
אמר רבי בנימין בר לוי: זה שבט בנימין שבא באחרונה.
 

כתיב (שם): כי לא בזה ולא שקץ ענות עני.
בנוהג שבעולם שני בני אדם נכנסו אצל הדיין א' עני ואחד עשיר.
אצל מי הדיין הופך את פניו, לא אצל העשיר?!
ברם הכא (שם): ולא הסתיר פניו ממנו ובשועו אליו שמע.

ר' חגי גזר תעניתא נחית מטרא.
אמר: לאו משום דאנא כדי, אלא משום דכתיב: כי לא בזה ולא שקץ ענות עני

וכשם שלא בזה את תפלתו, כך לא בזה את קרבנו, שנאמר: נפש כי תקריב וגו'.

 

Vayikra Rabba 3:2

 

AND WHEN ONE BRINGS A MEAL-OFFERING UNTO THE LORD (Lev. 2:1). [Applicable to this is the passage],

“You that fear the Lord, praise Him;

All you seed of Jacob, glorify Him;

And stand in awe of Him, you seed of Israel,” (Ps. 22:24).

 

“You that fear the Lord,”

said R. Joshua b. Levi, means those that fear heaven.

R. Samuel b. Nachman said: It means the righteous proselytes.

 

R. Chizkiya and R. Abbahu said in the name of R. Eleazar:

If the righteous proselytes come to the Hereafter,

Antoninus will come at the head of all of them.

 

And what does Scripture mean by saying, “All you seed of Jacob, glorify Him”?

This means the [first] eleven tribes.

If so, why is it also said, “And stand in awe of Him, all you seed of Israel”?

Said R. Benjamin b. Levi: this means the tribe of Benjamin who came [into the world] last.

 

It is further written,

“For He has not despised nor abhorred the lowliness of the poor.”

The usual experience is: Two men go before a judge, one of them poor and the other rich;

towards whom does the judge turn his face? Is it not towards the rich man?

But here, “He has not hid His face from him; but when he cried unto Him, He heard.”

 

R. Chaggai decreed a fast, and rain came down.

He said: It is not because I am worthy, but because it is written,

“For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the lowly.”

 

And even as He despises not his prayer, He, likewise, despises not his offering, as it is said,
